Cross Stitch No. 1, Thelma Rosner

From Joe Belanger at the London Free Press:
The centrepiece of the exhibition is a series of eight “powerful and beautiful” paintings, each 2.4 metres by 1.8 m in size, under the title Cross Stitch.

“These paintings originated out of Thelma’s concern about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” said gallery co-owner Andrew Smyth.

“The early paintings show influences of Afghani war rugs and Palestinian cross stitch embroidery. The images become more abstracted by the later paintings suggesting turbulence and uncertainty.”

There also are prints from the series titled, Dictionary, “which reflects the ideas of similarity and contrast between the cultures of Israel and Palestine.”
